PBL Frequently asked questions

Will my student need to “dress-up” for presentations?

The students will need some dress up clothes for presentations. They will use them enough to make it worth it. Many students are also required to dress-up for athletics and other special events as well. If this continues to be an issue for your family please contact the guidance office.

Will another student’s work affect my student’s grade?

The group portion of a grade is very small. The majority of your student’s grade is based on his or her individual performance and ability (traditional homework, quizzes, worksheets, essays…). If you find you have a question about this, please ask the individual teacher.

What if I do not have a computer, printer, software, and/or Internet at home?

You do not need to spend your own money on computers, software... We know that every student does not have equal access to technology at home. The teachers should be sensitive to this and provide alternative ideas. All materials are to be made available in print form. If you find you have a question about this, please ask the individual teacher.

How can my student work with the group when they have work, sports, and other responsibilities outside of school?

The teachers do not require student groups to meet outside of class. Some groups do make arrangement to meet outside of class, but this should not be required by the teacher. If you find you have a question about this, please ask the individual teacher.

Will we need to spend a lot of money on supplies for projects?

We want to help teach kids to be resourceful with costumes, posters, supplies and materials... They should be encouraged to be creative problems solvers (reduce, reuse, and recycle). If you find you have a question about this, please ask the individual teacher.

What if my student is too self-conscious to ask for a workshop?

We encourage students to ask for a workshop and we love to give them. Usually when one student has a question, others do as well. Students can also e-mail us questions and workshop requests.
