During a recent special Board meeting, the Van Wert City Schools Board of Education hired Michelle Mawer as treasurer to fill Mike Ruen's emptied position. Mawer is a Paulding native who said she is happy to be back in the area and looks forward to working in the Van Wert community.

After graduating from Paulding High School, Mawer attended International Business College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to receive her associate's degree in accounting. Around a decade later, she returned to school at Defiance College to earn her bachelor's degree. For over 20 years, Mawer worked in the private sector.

"I didn't go into school or governmental accounting until 2004 when I started at Dayton Public Schools," said Mawer. "I started out as the payroll manager and worked there for four years and then worked as the budget director for roughly four years."

Mawer felt a call to move closer to the Paulding area, so eight years ago she applied at Coldwater Community Schools and worked there as their treasurer. She said becoming a school treasurer was her overall goal and that the treasurer at Dayton was mentoring her for the position of treasurer.

"The treasurer that I had worked under the whole time I was at Dayton was going to retire," said Mawer. "It was a good time for me to move on."

Mawer said that while she loved working at Coldwater and enjoyed the staff she worked with, filling the position in Van Wert meant that she would be "just down the road" from home.

Mawer and her husband Brett have five children: Kyle, Lindsay, Ryan, Taylor, and Lance, two of whom live in Van Wert with their families, another lives in the Paulding area, and two others are currently in college.

While Mawer is still learning the ins and outs of the Van Wert treasurer position, she said she has enjoyed meeting new people and learning about the district so far.

"I'm enjoying it," said Mawer. "I really like the district and I like the staff."

Mawer has wanted to be a treasurer for as long as she can remember. She loves the variety in the position and working with others.

"I hope to do whatever I can do to keep the district solvent and help as a team player with the academic team to try to educate the students of Van Wert to the best of our ability," said Mawer of her goals with Van Wert City Schools.

"I'm excited to be here," added Mawer. "I look forward to learning more about the community and the people in the community. I'm going to do everything I can to keep the district moving forward and do my part in helping to educate the students the best we can."
