A Message from the Superintendent

What a year it has been at Van Wert City Schools.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We are proud of each of our graduates and excited to see what comes next for them.

This year, we also said thank you to 19 staff members who officially retired. Together, they gave 489.5 years of service to Van Wert City Schools and 562 years to education. That is an incredible amount of time spent serving students, supporting families, and making a difference. Their impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

There was also plenty to celebrate this spring in both the academic and athletic areas. The Class of 2026 included seven Graduates of Distinction, and many other students had tremendous success, with over $2 million of scholarship money being awarded. Our baseball team brought home a district championship, Zach Stoller was crowned a sectional champion in tennis, and Flannery Foster and Micah Cowan represented Van Wert at the OHSAA Track & Field State Championships. These accomplishments are a great reflection of the hard work and commitment of our students and coaches.

We truly believe that everything is centered around what it means to be a Cougar at Van Wert City Schools. Cougar Pride is bigger than one person. We work as a team, we have each other’s backs, and we depend on one another to be champions. Everyone has their own story and plays an important role in what we do. It is different here for a reason. We have made the decision to build something special, and we celebrate it together. Cougar Pride is real, and it all starts with trusting the process.

As we look ahead to next year, we are excited to welcome some new faces into our buildings who are ready to lead, teach, and serve our students.

Thank you to our staff, families, students, and Cougar community for continuing to make VWCS the best place to be.

Enjoy the summer, and as always…the best is yet to come—Go Cougars!

This is the Wired Educator Podcast, Episode 260! I am so excited for you to hear this conversation. I’m sitting down with a good friend, a colleague, and a truly great leader in Ohio: Mark Bagley, the Superintendent of Van Wert City Schools.

In this episode, we learn exactly what it takes to lead a district with authenticity and how to make a real difference in the lives of both colleagues and children. Mark is a “servant leader” in the truest sense of the word. Whether it’s picking up trash, helping in a classroom when there are no subs, or standing out at the bus hub every single morning, Mark leads from the trenches.

You are going to love this interview. Buckle up!
