VWCS Says "Thank You" To School Board Members

January is School Board Recognition Month with photos of the five board members

Van Wert City Schools will join more than 700 school districts throughout Ohio to celebrate School Board Recognition Month in January.

Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish policies that provide the framework for public schools. The VWCS board is responsible for an annual budget of $24 million, 2,195 students, 324 employees, and five buildings.

“For our board members, being on the board is a labor of love by people who care deeply about our district,” said Superintendent Vicki Brunn. “It’s often a thankless job, especially when difficult decisions need to be made. I can tell you the folks who serve on our board of education are a rarity; each and every one of them is on the board in order to provide the best possible education for our students.”

Current school board members include Anthony Adams, Debby Compton, Rachel Dickman, Tom Losh, and Scott Mull. Dickman is the newest board member, having joined in December 2018. In just one short year together, the board has overseen a variety of substantial projects including, but not limited to, implementing a new Strategic Plan, updating all lighting and security for five buildings, and hiring a new Treasurer. The board will continue to prioritize the stadium renovation and baseball/softball complex projects, as well as the Niswonger Performing Arts Annex addition project.

In addition to their board responsibilities, each member participates in other organizations throughout the district and our community, including an Athletic Council, VWASIG (Van Wert Area School Insurance Group), Vantage Board of Education, OSBA (Ohio School Boards Association) Legislative Liaison, Delegate/Alternate Delegate to the OSBA Annual Capital Conference, Representative to the Neola Policy Development Committee, and VWAPAF (Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation).

“I would ask you to reach out to a board member and say, ‘Thank you for serving on our board of education,’” Brunn emphasized. “Van Wert City Schools is a very special district and our board members go to great lengths to keep it that way.”
