VAN WERT — More than 250 fifth-grade students from across Van Wert County gathered Tuesday (May 12) at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds for the annual “Let’s Get Down to Business” event, an interactive program designed to introduce young learners to local careers and industries.

Hosted by Career Connections of Van Wert County, the event brought together students from Crestview, Lincolnview, Van Wert and St. Mary’s of the Assumption Parochial School for a day of hands-on learning and exploration.

“This event introduces hundreds of students and volunteers to experience the goods and services that businesses and organizations in Van Wert County have to offer, as well as introducing a variety of career options associated with those industries,” said Brad Harsha, Career Connections Board president.

Throughout the day, students rotated through four stations focused on different aspects of the workforce and economy.

At the Jobs Station, local professionals shared information about job qualifications, résumé writing, and interview strategies. The Consumer Station allowed students to simulate real-world budgeting by earning income and managing expenses such as childcare, car payments, and taxes.

The Economic Station provided an overview of Van Wert’s economy and local resources, including Van Wert Works, while the Business Showcase featured demonstrations and interactive displays from local companies and organizations representing fields such as finance, manufacturing, nonprofit services and law enforcement.

Students also earned tickets throughout the event to enter raffles for prizes. “Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we have some fantastic prizes and giveaways,” Harsha said. “Many participating businesses are also providing swag items to make the experience even more memorable.”

The event was funded through a grant from the Van Wert County Foundation. Career Connections of Van Wert County is an agency of the United Way of Van Wert County.
