The 5th annual Operation Back to School outreach event, sponsored by First United Methodist Church, is set for the afternoon of Aug. 2, 2020. It will definitely look different than in years past. There will not be booths, food or door prizes this year to ensure the safety for all involved. The 5th year event will be held at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds with information to come as they are able to make these decisions. This will be a drive through situation with signage and volunteers showing participants the way.
Operation Back to School provides book bags, school supplies and personal hygiene items to children in Van Wert County — preschool through 12th grade.
In 2019 the event was a success, serving over 900 children and 500 families. In addition, 20 community agencies had booths of information, door prizes were given away throughout the afternoon, games and activities for the children were available and free food was provided to all who attended.
First United Methodist Church is seeking assistance with monetary donations to help purchase supplies such as Kleenex, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizers and masks. Volunteers are also needed to help.
Anyone who would like to volunteer or who has questions may call Teresa Shaffer at 419/238-0631, ext. 307 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The church website: www.vanwertfirst.net/operation-back-school/ can be accessed for ‘Business Reply Form,’ ‘Church Reply Form,’ ‘Service Organization Reply Form,’ ‘Volunteer’ or ‘Student Registration.’ There will be no on-site registration so it is important to register online or by phoning the church. July 10 is the deadline for online partnering with them. Online student registration will close at midnight on July 26.
