A four-run second inning proved to be too much for the Lady Cougars to overcome in their first WBL game of the season against Bath on Tuesday.
The Wildkittens held Van Wert to just five hits and they were able to take advantage of four errors to win the game 6-1.
Leadoff batter Chandler Clark didn't have a hit in her four plate appearances, but she managed to push a run across in Bath's four-run second when she was plunked by Van Wert starter Emilee Phillips.
Aside from the second frame, Phillips put together a solid seven inning outing in which she struck out six batters and yielded just two earned runs on six hits.
Four costly errors allowed Bath to plate four additional runs, three of them on a line drive to left that was misplayed by Lauren McHugh and allowed three more runs to cross the plate in the second inning. Bath added their fifth run of the game in the third inning on an RBI single from Shelby Marstellar.
The Lady Cougars got their lone run in the fourth inning on a RBI single from Hope Blythe. Wildkittens starter Dylan Grigsby stymied the Van Wert offense for the rest of the night as she needed just 89 pitches to hold the Cougars to five hits and one run.
Blythe (2), Phillips, Carlee Young and Lorynn German made up the entirety of Van Wert's five hits in the game.
The Lady Cougars (1-4, 0-1) will look to get back on track on Friday with a home game against Celina.
