A parade of threes and a suffocating defensive attack for St. Marys turned a WBL showdown into a 78-43 rout victory over Van Wert on Thursday night.

The Lady Riders drilled 12 triples and ran away after a competitive first quarter to improve to 11-3 (4-1 WBL) and stay in the thick of things at the top of the conference.

Noey Ruane struggled to miss the bottom of the net as she was responsible for five threes on her way to a 24-point evening for St. Marys. Kendall Dieringer had 13 and both Karsyn McGlothen and Morgan Hesse finished the game with 10.

The majority of Van Wert’s offense consisted of 18 points from Kyra Welch. Welch scored all nine for the Lady Cougars in the first, including four straight in the middle of the quarter to give Van Wert its last lead of the night at 9-8.

After that, Ruane had three, Dieringer successfully converted a three-point play and Cora Rable added a basket to put St. Marys in front 16-9.

Welch split a pair of free throws to open the second quarter, then St. Marys ripped off 18 of the half’s final 21 points to take control of the game.

The Lady Riders closed out the half on three straight treys from Ruane, Dieringer and Reese Rable to take a commanding 34-13 lead.

Van Wert offense came alive in the third, but St. Marys never let up and they outscored the visitors 24-19. Four different players scored more than once in the quarter for the Lady Riders, and four different players hit a three in the third.

More of the same continued into the fourth quarter where St. Marys put another 20 points on the board to Van Wert’s 11.

For the Lady Cougars, Welch’s 18 led the way followed by Sofi Houg with nine and both Carlee Young and Lexi Barnhart with six.

Van Wert is now 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the WBL following the loss. They’ll return to action on Monday with a non-conference game against Crestview.
